In a significant collaboration, LOUDER and Rafto for Human Rights organized a pivotal meeting for Women Rights Defenders (WHRDs) from the MENA region in Istanbul, Turkey, from December 18 to 20, 2021. This forum was a crucial step towards addressing the well-being and safety of WHRDs, especially considering the increasingly challenging contexts and situations in which they promote women’s rights. The meeting highlighted the unique and additional threats WHRDs face, both as human rights defenders and as women, such as gender-based violence and gender-specific risks. Twenty WHRDs from countries including Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Bahrain, and Iran, participated to map out the current situation and challenges they face. This gathering underscored the importance of creating a supportive environment for WHRDs, ensuring their protection, and acknowledging their invaluable contribution to the advancement of women’s rights across the MENA region.
