Digital Paths to Empowerment
for Iraqi Women
The Wa3eya project, a collaborative effort between LOUDER and Al Iraqi Firdaws organization, funded by SIDA and Norwegian People’s Aid, is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering Iraqi women. The project’s centerpiece, the “واعية” (Wa3eya, meaning “She is Aware”) mobile application, is a digital tool designed to educate and empower women in their journey of political participation.
Wa3eya stands as a symbol of knowledge and empowerment. It is an educational tool that enhances awareness of women’s rights and political participation. This digital application serves as a free, accessible, and user-friendly platform that operates offline, utilizing technology through various narratives and visuals. Its purpose is to empower both women and men to identify and challenge discriminatory behaviors.

The mission of Wa3eya is multifaceted. It provides essential guidance on women’s rights, illuminates the distinction between gender and sex, and offers a comprehensive understanding of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Additionally, the app highlights international standards and legal instruments on women’s rights adopted by UN bodies, thereby empowering women with crucial information and tools.
Wa3eya goes beyond basic education by equipping women with key messages and narratives for effective communication in the media and during election campaigns. This aspect of the app is pivotal in ensuring women’s voices are heard and represented accurately in public forums.
The Wa3eya app is a comprehensive resource that provides an understanding of national laws from a gender equality perspective. It addresses the combat against gender-based violence and aligns with human rights principles and international conventions ratified by Iraq.
The project is a significant stride towards gender equality in Iraq. By providing women with the tools and knowledge necessary for political participation and awareness of their rights, Wa3eya is not just an app; it’s a movement towards a more equitable and informed society. It’s a testament to the power of technology and education in breaking down barriers and fostering a more inclusive and aware community.
LOUDER is a human rights and peacebuilding organization that fosters transformational human rights education driven by the Rights based approach (HRBA).
