Climate change is not only an environmental problem, but also a human rights crisis. It affects people differently depending on their social and economic status, and often worsens the existing inequalities and injustices. Climate justice is a concept that recognizes the ethical and political dimensions of climate change, and calls for a fair and equitable response that protects the rights and dignity of all people, especially those who are most vulnerable and marginalized. Climate justice emphasizes that those who have contributed the least to the problem are the ones who suffer the most from its consequences. These impacts threaten the fundamental rights to life, health, and livelihood that every human being deserves. Climate justice is also intrinsically linked SDG 13 and 5 which calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, and to strengthen the capacity of countries to adapt to climate-related hazards and natural disasters, and promotes gender equality and women’s empowerment, to ensure that
• To raise awareness and empower rights holders, and to hold duty bearers accountable, on the human rights implications of climate change and the human rights duties and responsibilities of States and other actors in relation to climate action.
• To participate in and influence national, regional and international human rights mechanisms and processes to address the human rights implications of climate change.
