A Training Program for Rural
Women, Girls, and Youth
In a collaborative effort to address Gender-Based Violence (GBV), LOUDER has partnered with the Intersectionist Feminist Collective, supported by Rafto for Human Rights, to implement a unique training program. This initiative specifically targets women, young girls, and youth in rural areas of Lebanon, aiming to empower them with knowledge about their rights and the tools needed to effectively combat GBV.
The training program is structured into three comprehensive modules, each designed to cover different aspects of human rights and GBV. The first module offers a deep dive into human rights within the MENA context, focusing on providing participants with practical knowledge about basic rights from both international and legal perspectives. This module also includes innovative approaches like gamifying human rights in online workshops to enhance understanding and engagement.
The second module shifts the focus to understanding gender-based violence in the Beqaa region. Here, participants are educated on the universality of women’s rights and the definitions of “gender” and “gender-based violence” (GBV), increasing their awareness and understanding of these critical issues.
The program has seen significant participation, with 216 registered participants, including 80 women and girls, as well as men and boys. These participants represent a diverse array of backgrounds in terms of age, ethnicity, religion, political belonging, and education, and come from various sub-districts across Lebanon.
The training not only addresses basic concepts of human rights and international human rights law but also focuses on the main challenges specific to Lebanon. Topics such as the concept of gender and sex, gender-based violence, political participation (highlighting the Beijing Declaration), UN Resolution 1325 on women, peace, and security agenda, and SDG5 are thoroughly covered. Additionally, international treaties ratified by Lebanon and national strategies promoting women’s political participation and their role in peace and security are discussed. The training also includes an examination of non-contractual mechanisms of the United Nations, like the universal periodic review and special procedures.
This training initiative by LOUDER is a critical step towards achieving gender justice and equality in Lebanon. By educating and empowering individuals and communities, it creates a foundation for a society where gender-based violence is actively challenged, and the rights of all individuals, regardless of gender, are respected and upheld.
LOUDER is a human rights and peacebuilding organization that fosters transformational human rights education driven by the Rights based approach (HRBA).
