The connection between human rights and peacebuilding is based on the recognition that human rights violations are often the root causes of conflict and that peace can only be sustained if human rights are respected, protected, and fulfilled. This is also the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 global goals that aim to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by 2030, integrating Global indicator framework for the Sustainable Development Goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
A human rights-based approach to peacebuilding aims to address the structural inequalities and injustices that fuel conflict and extremism and to empower people to claim their rights and participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives.
A human rights-based approach also seeks to strengthen the capacities of duty bearers, uphold their obligations under international human rights law, and ensure accountability for any violations.
The human rights approach to peacebuilding is based on the principles of participation of rights holders, the link with human rights obligations, accountability of duty bearers, non-discrimination, and transparency.
