The security and justice sectors are very important for the protection of individuals’ human rights. They have to resort to judicial and security institutions as the main channels to seek redress and remedy for human rights violations. However, these institutions can also be sources of human rights abuses if they are not well-trained, accountable, and respectful of human rights standards. Therefore, it is essential to enhance the capacity, awareness, and professionalism of security and justice personnels and institutions on human rights issues. By doing so, they will be able to protect the rights of individuals more effectively and efficiently. This will also lead to more sustainable and cohesive communities, which in turn will strengthen the rule of law. Working on this thematic priority contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16), which is to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
